One of the most frequent questions I get asked, is
regarding the different generations of W5 heads and how to identify
them. It is widely known that some of the earlier W5 heads had casting
problems, and many customers want to avoid those heads. Here is a quick
synopsis of how to quickly ID different generations of W5 cylinder
heads: |

“THIS CYLINDER HEAD HAS NO CORE PLUGS IN THE ENDS, ALSO DOES NOT HAVE THE HORSESHOE SHAPED BOSS ON THE END…. THIS IS A VERY EARLY W5, MOST LIKELY LATE 1980’s EARLY 1990’s” |

![]() “THIS IS A LAST GENERATION W5, WITH BLUE ANODIZED ALUMINUM ¾” NPT PIPE PLUGS IN THE ENDS. THESE ARE KNOWN AS THE “CORE PLUGS” BECAUSE THEY WERE ADDED TO HELP REMOVE THE SAND FROM THE CASTING CORES DURING THE CASTING PROCESS AT THE FOUNDRY. MIDDLE GENERATION W5 HEADS WILL HAVE THIS HORSESHOE SHAPED BOSS THE PLUGS ARE LOCATED IN, BUT WILL NOT HAVE THE PLUGS IN THEM. |
![]() “OF COURSE THE CASTING #’S THEMSELVES TELL A TALE AS WELL….ALL W5’s WILL HAVE THE SAME CASTING # 4452926, HOWEVER THIS IS AN OLDER HEAD, IT ONLY HAS THE CASTING # AND NO OTHER INFO CAST BETWEEN THE #1 AND #3 SPARK PLUG HOLE. |

![]() THIS IS LAST GENERATION W5. CONSIDERED BY SOME TO BE THE BEST CASTINGS OF ALL. THE CASTING #’S ARE SIMILAR TO THE 1996 HEAD ABOVE, HOWEVER THE DATE HAS BEEN DROPPED AND THE K036 LOGO HAS BEEN ADDED. THESE ARE PROBABLY 1998 CASTINGS, AND WILL USUALLY EXHIBIT GOOD CASTING AND MACHINING QUALITY. THESE CASTINGS WILL HAVE A FOUR DIGIT SEQUENCE OF LETTERS AND NUMBERS ABOVE THE CASTING # SUCH AS THE KO36 IN THE PICTURE, BUT COULD BE ANY DIFFERENT COMBINATION OF LETTERS AND #’s SUCH AS L196 ETC. |
